Best paid sports team in world
"Money is a subsidiary of success. People always want to sponsor you. Without them there would be no money in sport."
Clive Lloyd quotes
A study by sportingintelligence.com for inaugural annual review of Global Sports Salaries reveals some fascinating insights into the world of multi-million dollar sporting teams. The survey has come up with a list of the top tewelve highest paid sports teams based on the clubs average starting weekly salary. The New York Yankees- Major League Baseball (USA) came out on top globally best-paid team in world sport, measured by average pay, ahead of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea, with the Dallas Mavericks of basketball's NBA in fifth. The Yankees baseball club is formally owned by Yankee Global Enterprises LLC which owns the team's regional YES sports network. The Premier League is still the best-paying football league on average, but that only makes it the fourth best paying sports league in the world with the NBA (basketball), IPL (cricket) and MLB (baseball) all out ahead.
The Yankees stand alone at the top of the salary scale, with each player on the roster earning an average of £89,897 per player per week in 2009, or £4.7m per player last year, when the Yankees won the World Series - the biggest prize in baseball. Real Madrid's stars earned £4.2m per year each in the period reviewed for Spanish football. The corresponding figures were £4.1m at Barca, £3.59m at Chelsea and £3.56m at the Mavericks.
Critics say the Yankees buy championships. Yet the 2009 World Series title was the team's first since 2000, despite the fact that George Steinbrenner's crew has outspent other Major League teams every year since then. Alex Rodriguez, or A-Rod as he's known to his multitude of fans, is the highest-paid of all the Yankees at around AUS$32.8 million, having signed a rather lucrative 10-year contract with the club in December, 2007.The figures suggest Babe Ruth was on the right track when he chose Yankee Stadium as his home back in 1920, the Yankees on top of a rich-list .The gap between the Yankees payroll and that of the second-highest MLB team (appx. $70 million) was more than the total payroll of 11 other clubs. The Yankees spent so much on salaries they had to pay a further £15.7m in "luxury tax" to the MLB for overspending.
