While most of us can only dream of owning the fastest car in the world, some will do whatever it takes to possess the SSC Ultimate Aero an American-built mid-engine supercar by Shelby SuperCars. Its higher-performance limited production version, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, is the fastest street legal car in the world with massive speed of 257 mph+ (411.99 km/h) and reaching 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. This speed was achieved during tests on September 13, 2007 in West Richland, Washington, United States and verified by Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007.
The SSC Ultimate Aero does not have electronic aids like ABS brakes or traction control. The record-breaking run was made on 13 September 2007 and is the average of two runs in opposite directions, in accordance with speed record rules. On the first run the car clocked 257.44mph and then 254.91mph on the return run, giving an average of 256.18mph. The previous record, held by the Bugatti, was 253.81mph.
The car which set the speed record was the 2007 version. Last year the Ultimate Aero was updated with a new twin-turbo V8, with an all new aluminium block. The 2009 spec car is meant to have 15 per cent more horsepower and a theoretical top speed of 272.102mph. It also incorporates an aero brake system to help slow the car down. It costs around $620,000. SSC state that the engine is an all aluminum custom-modified V8 with variable boost forced induction.The lump is accually sourced from a Corvette C5R. Producing nearly 800 bhp.
SSC will pursues the title of "World's Fastest Production Electric Car" and conduct a marketing campaign consisting of international motor shows, magazine articles, TV appearances and live media events.
